Australia’s monthly Consumer Price Index (CPI) rose 2.4% in April 2025, unchanged from the previous two months and marking the lowest rate since November 2024. The reading was slightly above market expectations of a 2.3% increase but remained within the central bank’s target range of 2-3%. Inflation moderated for food and non-alcoholic beverages (3.1% vs 3.4% in March) and alcohol and tobacco (5.7% vs 6.7%). Inflation accelerated for housing (2.2% vs 1.8%), recreation and culture (3.6% vs 2.7%), health (4.4% vs 4.0%), and clothing and footwear (0.8% vs 0.7%). On the other hand, education inflation was steady at 5.7%. By contrast, deflation in the transport sector deepened (-3.2% vs -1.9%), as automotive fuel prices fell the most in seven months (-12.0% vs -7.6%). Meanwhile, the annual trimmed mean inflation edged up to 2.8% from 2.7% in the prior month. Excluding volatile items and travel, the CPI rose 2.8%, accelerating from a 2.6% gain in March.
