France’s annual inflation rate unexpectedly eased to 0.7% in May 2025, the lowest level since February 2021, down from 0.8% in both March and April, and below expectations of 0.9%, according to preliminary estimates. The moderation was largely driven by a slower increase in service prices (2.1% vs. 2.4%), notably due to a deceleration in transportation costs and a sharper decline in communication prices. Energy prices fell by 8.1%, following a 7.8% drop in the previous month. In contrast, food price inflation accelerated slightly (1.3% vs. 1.2%), while tobacco prices remained stable at a 4.1% annual increase. Manufactured goods prices continued to decline at the same annual pace of -0.2%. On a monthly basis, the CPI slipped by 0.1%, with eergy cost falling for a fourth month while food prices continued to rise. Meanwhile, the EU-harmonised CPI rose 0.6% year-on-year, the lowest rate since December 2020, and fell 0.2% from the previous month.
