The volume of mortgage applications in the US declined 3.8% in the week ended December 12th 2025, reversing from a 4.8% jump in the previous period, and marking the biggest decline in a month, according to the MBA. Applications for mortgages to purchase a home declined 2.8% while those to refinance a home loan plunged 3.6%. “Purchase application volume typically drops off quickly at the end of the year, and this shifts the mix of the business, with the refinance share reaching 59 percent last week, the highest level since September”, said Mike Fratantoni, MBA’s SVP. Meanwhile, the average contract interest rate on 30-year fixed-rate mortgages with conforming loan balances ($806,500 or less) increased to 6.38% from 6.33% in the previous period.
