Exports fell by 5.4% year-on-year to EUR 7.87 billion, weighed down by a 4.4% drop in shipments to EU countries and a sharper 7.2% decline in sales to non-EU markets. On the other hand, imports grew by 0.4% from a year earlier to EUR 11.01 billion, primarily due to a 6.6% increase in purchases from non-EU countries, despite a 1.9% fall in purchases from EU countries. In the first four months of the year, the trade deficit widened to EUR 11.61 billion from EUR 9.32 billion in the same period a year earlier, as exports rose by just 0.5%, while imports increased more notably by 6%.
