Slovakia’s trade surplus expanded to EUR 560.8 million in May 2025, from EUR 107 million in the corresponding month of the previous year and well above market expectations of a EUR 130 million surplus. The improvement was driven by a rise in exports alongside a decline in imports. Exports grew by 3.1% year-on-year to EUR 9,375.3 million, with the most significant contribution coming from a surge of over 27% in the category of miscellaneous manufactured articles. Exports to the EU rose by approximately 3%, while those to non-EU countries climbed by 5%. Meanwhile, imports fell by 1.9% to EUR 8,814.5 million, largely due to a drop of more than 22% in the mineral fuels section, which includes oil, electricity, and natural gas. Imports from non-EU countries declined by over 7%, while those from the EU increased by 1%. For the first five months of the year, the country’s trade surplus shrank to EUR 764.5 million from EUR 2,172.2 million in the same period last year.
