Initial jobless claims in the US slumped by 27,000 from the previous week to 191,000 on the last week of November, which included the Thanksgiving holiday. The commonly volatile holiday period marked a fourth consecutive drop and well below market expectations of 220,000 to the lowest weekly level since September of 2022. In the meantime, continuing claims fell 4,000 to 1,939,000 on the earlier period. The results were loosely aligned with other labor market data in showing that firings are slowing, while a sharp reduction in hiring activity maintained outstanding unemployment insurance levels relatively higher compared to the recovery of the Covid pandemic shock. Meanwhile, initial unemployment claims for Federal employees fell by 599 from the earlier period to 1,125, easing from its slight surge amid the government shutdown.
