The number of individuals filing for unemployment benefits in the U.S. rose by 33,000, reaching a total of 258,000 for the week ending October 5th, surpassing market expectations of 230,000. This marks the highest level in 14 months, largely driven by substantial increases in Michigan and states affected by Hurricane Helene. In Michigan alone, claims surged by 10,667 over the past two weeks, primarily due to layoffs in the manufacturing and management sectors. North Carolina and Florida also saw notable increases, with claims rising by 8,534 and 3,842, respectively. Additionally, outstanding claims climbed by 42,000 to 1,861,000 during the previous week. The four-week moving average for initial claims, which helps smooth out weekly fluctuations, increased by 6,750, bringing the total to 231,000.
